This page provides an overview of essential literature searching tools and databases used by health sciences librarians to support instruction, research, and more.
Databases to Know
PubMed
PubMed is a database produced by the National Library of Medicine that covers all areas of biomedicine, including medicine, allied health, public health, and basic science. PubMed includes MEDLINE. Tutorials are available from the NLM, and updates appear on the NLM Technical Bulletin.
EMBASE
A biomedical database similar in scope to PubMed but with additional international journals, basic sciences coverage, and conference proceedings. With PubMed/MEDLINE and Cochrane, considered a must-search for systematic reviews. Searching webinar available from UK Medical Center Library.
Web of Science
Platform hosting a variety of databases across disciplines. Also includes author profiles and some bibliometric data and can be useful for systematic reviews. Searching webinar available from UK Medical Center Library.
CINAHL
CINAHL is a major nursing and allied health database. It is a subscription product but available to most institutions in Kentucky through KYVL. A tutorial is available from EBSCO.
PsycINFO
A major database for psychology, including mental and behavioral health. Advanced searching webinar available from UK Medical Center Library.
Cochrane Library
Home to the Cochrane Collaboration’s systematic reviews and the CENTRAL register of clinical trials. With PubMed/MEDLINE and EMBASE, considered a must-search for systematic reviews. Tutorial available from UofL’s Kornhauser Health Sciences Library.
Scopus
Largest subscription database covering over 300 disciplines. Includes author profiles and extensive bibliometric data and can be useful for systematic reviews.
